Flora & Fauna - 4 week course at Bohemian Flowers Farm
In this 4 week course, participants will learn a unique approach to watercolor, intended to alleviate the frustration that many experience when learning this beautiful yet challenging medium. The class will focus on strengthening one’s observational skills, giving the artist a foundation off of which to build their paintings in a step by step layering process, that trains the artist to see value and color
Our subject matter will be flora and fauna - a sampling of plants and animals. These subjects are great for beginners and experienced artists alike; their organic shapes make them forgiving drawing subjects, but their beauty can be a muse for life.
This class will work both from photographs and from life, practicing observational drawing in addition to watercolor technique. With 4 class sessions, participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills and build muscle memory with a medium that often feels like it has a mind of its own.

Painting Produce - 2 week workshop
March at Calistoga Art Center
In this 2 week introductory course, participants will learn a unique approach to watercolor, intended to alleviate the frustration that many experience when learning this beautiful yet challenging medium.
The class will practice basic drawing in addition to watercolor technique, with a focus on strengthening one’s observational skills while learning a step by step layering process that trains the artist to see value and color.
Our unifying subject will be seasonal produce - fruits, veggies and herbs, that we will render from life. These subjects are great for beginners and experienced watercolor painters alike; their organic shapes make them forgiving drawing subjects, but their beauty can be a muse for life.
All experience levels welcome and all materials provided.

Plein Air Watercolor Landscapes at Ragle Ranch
May in Sebastopol
Learn to paint landscapes en plein air at Ragle Ranch. In this single-session workshop, participants will learn and practice watercolor while spending time outdoors at our beautiful local park. Students will choose a scene to paint and receive instruction on the basics of landscape painting, including composition, color temperature and value, linear perspective and atmospheric perspective. Gain a new appreciation for the beauty of your surroundings through close observation and careful rendering.
All levels of experience are welcome! Feel free to bring a portable easel if you have one and a lightweight folding chair. Otherwise seating is at picnic tables and park benches or on the ground. All other materials are provided.

Developing Your Drawing Eye - 6 week course
March/April at Sonoma Community Center
It’s never too late to learn to draw – especially when nobody’s grading you. Whether you are an abject beginner, haven’t picked up a pencil since high school, or you’re a creative who has always felt intimidated by observational drawing, this six-week class is offered with you in mind.
We’ll take the mystery – and the pressure – out of drawing from observation. You’ll learn how to really see like an artist, practice simple techniques step by step, and build skills at your own pace. No talent required, and perfection is off the table.
Studying observational drawing offers a foundational skill set that you will carry into every medium you might wish to explore. Discover the joy of drawing and build practical skills to expand your creative expression!

Intro to Observational Drawing - 1 day workshop
March at Sebastopol Center for the Arts
In this one day introductory workshop, participants will get a peek into the process of building one’s drawing abilities through developing close observational skills and learning fundamental drawing techniques. If you find this intro helpful and want to keep exploring, you can sign up for the 3 week class one month later.
This course is for anyone who wants to practice and advance their drawing skills - beginners, those who haven’t practiced in years, or any artists who just want to learn more and practice with consistent feedback and guidance. Learning to draw is truly learning to see - a skill that anyone can be taught, practice, and hone. Through demonstration, practice, and reflective discussion, this class will explore the foundations of classical drawing techniques in a low pressure environment.
Observational drawing gives all artists a foundation of practical knowledge and skills that infinitely expands the possibilities of what one can create. If your ideas feel limited by your drawing skills, if you feel frustrated or stuck in your painting practice, or if you simply want to start drawing and are looking for a way to begin, this is the class for you.

Plein Air Sketching at the Sonoma Botanical Garden

Enjoy a morning in the beautiful Sonoma Botanical Garden while sketching the seasonal flowers, foliage, and the sculpture of their current exhibition, Spirit Guides: Fantastical Creatures from the Workshop of Jacobo and María Ángeles. In this one day workshop, participants will learn and practice foundational drawing techniques while sketching both organic and constructed forms, creating a unique composition of art and nature.
Discover the meditative benefits of a plein air art practice, and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world around you through close observation and intentional rendering. All materials are provided and all experience and skill levels are welcome!

Paper Arts Courses
Pop-Up Valentines
February at Sebastopol Center for the Arts
In this unique class we will explore the foundations of pop up design and paper cutting while creating one of a kind pop up valentines for loved ones. Students will learn foundational “folds” for pop up elements and then create their own valentines. Students can personalize basic designs that we will walk through step by step, or dream up their own imaginative way to use the folds they have learned to create their own pop up design for their cards.
With an introduction to paper cutting technique, students can expand on their designs and create something enchanting. Artists will have some multimedia options if they wish to adorn their pop up elements and card pages (such as colored pencils and markers), or may opt to let the cut paper speak for itself.
In this one day workshop we will cover: the basic rules underlying pop up mechanics, beginning pop up “folds”, proper knife handling, foundational paper cutting skills, and the basics of pop up design. This class is suitable for artists of all skill levels. All materials included.

Paper Lantern Workshop
April at Sebastopol Center for the Arts
Discover the magic of paper cutting In this one-day workshop making your own paper lantern. Participants will learn paper cutting design and knife technique, and create a unique, illuminated piece of art.
After exploring examples of paper cutting artists and their work, students will dream up their own paper lantern designs to execute with guidance and instruction. Learn how to translate your ideas into a cut paper composition, then how to cut out your composition with minimized frustration. Finally, we will assemble our lanterns and illuminate them to bask in the glow of your efforts.
This class will cover: proper knife handling, foundational paper cutting skills, and the basics of paper cutting design. A light box will be available if students would like to bring reference images to trace onto their lantern materials.
This class is suitable for artists of all skill levels. All materials included, including an electric votive to illuminate your paper lantern safely. Safety Note: Participants must have strong enough fine motor abilities to handle a sharp blade safely.
